John and Sharkey Nelson

Inducted: 2002

John Nelson was a high-scoring forward while playing for his father, Sharkey, in the early 1960s. In an era when the Vikings were scoring in the low 60s, Nelson was a scoring prodigy. He led the Vikings in scoring all four seasons and was named team Most Valuable Player each year. Nelson also ranks in the top 10 all-time in rebounding at PSU with 643. During his senior year, Nelson averaged a career-high 25.8 points for new head coach Marion Pericin. He was given the team’s Morris Rogoway award three times for scholarship, personal achievement and ability.
